Samsung has created tiny high resolution OLED-display
15 October 2007Samsung SDI, which is a member of Samsung Group, has developed 3 inches light-emitting diode display, which can support the resolution in 800 x 480 pixels. For comparison, resolution of modern OLED-displays with such sizes makes 320 x 240 pixels that is approximately four times less. An increase of resolution became possible due to compression of pixels. Samsung SDI’s engineers have removed third of auxiliary pixels and have placed the main pixels closer to each other.
Quality of the image has been also improved. The display covers all NTSC range, and reflectance ratio reaches 1000:1. On the average the display consumes about 0,4 watt. Owing to low inertness of light-emitting diodes it is able to display sharp movements without appreciable smearing effect.
Representatives of the company consider, that such displays will find wide application in mobile phones, portable media-players, game consoles, communicators, etc. Mass production of displays for specific products is planned for the summer of 2008. Deliveries of test samples will be started in the beginning of the next year.
