AMD has announced the new graphic processor: FireStream

16 November 2007

AMD has presented the new graphic processor intended for complex calculations in scientific-industrial sphere, installation to workstations, servers and high-end personal computers of various assignment.

The new chip named FireStream is based on 55-nanometer tech-process, includes 660 million transistors and 320 computation modules and works with a speed 500 GigaFLOPS (Billion Floating-Point Operations per Second). Capacity of calculations of the new graphic chip is hundred times more in comparison with binuclear processor Opteron, say in the company.

The new chip is intended mainly for high-end personal computers (HPC), which work, for example, in the field of scientific researches, climatic analysis, search of oil deposits and other branches where high capacity of calculations is required. FireStream’s principle of action is based on parallelism. Processor divides work into separate tasks and fulfils all of them simultaneously.

This chip became also a basis for the first videocard - FireStream 9170 with 2 GB high-speed memory GDDR3, consuming less than 150 watt. Its cost makes about $2 thousand. This videocard will be offered as an option to new computers, but can also be installed in existing servers and workstations with PCI Express 2.0 x16 slot.
