Sony created the first-ever flexible screen

29 May 2007

Sony Company has presented the first-ever flexible screen on organic light diodes (FOLED, abbreviation from Flexible OLED) which is able to display 16,7 million colors.
Specifications of a novelty are rather interesting - 2,6-inch OLED-screen with the resolution 160 х 120 points, brightness: 100 nit, and this is a plastic foil of only 0,0118 inches. It can display 16,7 million colors, having the picture contrast: 1000 : 1.
It is necessary to note, that flexible SONY screen looks much more better than Samsung and LG.Philips inventions, at least, because of the amount of displayed colors - 16,7 million against 256 and 16 thousand correspondingly. Advantages of a novelty are also its small thickness and small weight of the screen. The only disadvantage is the parameter of contrast which is lower, than the competitors may offer.
Today flexible OLED-screens are used only in prototypes of devices, which manufacturers show during the exhibitions. But the company plans, that such screens will be parts of new generation mobile phones and other mobile devices where small weight and low power consumption are important.
